This week the class started to learn how to use the online version of the PARCC test. This is new to the elementary grades this year, so they had to learn all the tools. This seems very complicated for them and a lot of work. The PARCC test is something I have learned about throughout Trinity, but to actually see the example tests verifies how hard this test can be. I assisted with the students as the teacher showed what to do on her computer on the board.
During reading I am learning how to do the small groups. This relates to Standard 1 Teaching Diverse Students, because the students are split into their groups by their reading level. My teacher has allowed me to watch her do a few and this week I am starting to take that over. We just began these because the DRA testing has ended. I went to the 3rd grade DRA meeting, which was very informative. I like how the teachers and the reading specialists/ELL teachers all work together to come up with solutions/interventions for the children who scored low. I am glad I was able to sit in on this and see how important it is to communicate with other teachers and to work together.
I am starting to transfer into teaching writing. We are doing biographies and starting with reading biography articles/books to the students and having them pick out what the world learned from them. This can be challenging at times for the students to pick someone they know who holds those same qualities as the person we read about. I should be taking over the writing subject by next week as well.
Fractions have begun in math and me and my teacher have discussed co-teaching this so it is a nice transition of me taking over math fully. The fractions are very confusing to some of the students, and today was basically another re-teach. It seems that they feel better about it after today and hopefully don't lose what they learned over the long weekend. This relates to Standard 3 Planning Differentiated Instruction because before the lesson began, we decided to pull the struggling students from yesterday to the back for a small group worksheet that was reviewing all the basics. This helped because then they were actually able to answer the morning work problem with a deeper understanding than they had from yesterday.
