Anne Harris Week 15

This week we have continued working with our skill leveled groups on fractions. There are five students who are excelling in fractions and four who are still struggling very much. I have made different worksheets and activities for these students to help them remember the strategies we have been using since we began this chapter. This relates to Standard 1 and 3. It seems we are going to be on this for a lot longer than anticipated. Moving forward with reading and comparing, setting, plot, and theme the students began working with their partners to utilize this comprehension strategy. They have been doing amazing at this and I am very impressed with their work on this. They should be just fine working independently at the end of next week. Their success relates to Standard 2 and 6. We have been doing more land form reading on Epic Reading online and the students have been able to find interesting facts to write in their social studies notebook on each. Anne Harris Week 14

This week I began doing a math workshop to help the students with fractions. There were 4 stations and one of them was working directly with me. I split the groups up into skill level and this seemed to go very well overall. This meets Standard 1 and 3. The students were able to work with peers at a similar skill level and could work through their issues together. I plan to use this kind of thing for the future to help students when they are continually struggling so I get more of an opportunity to work in small groups consistently. The students are moving along with their biographies and I would say about half the class is done typing. From what I could tell overall was the most challenging was taking the answers to the questions they asked their person and turning that into full sentences. The students struggled with that and not just writing the answer word for word. This took a lot of one on one work and repetitive explanation of correct writing and incorrect writing. The student...

Anne Harris Week 13

This week we did PARCC testing. I learned how to administer the tests and I was glad I was able to see this take place. This relates to standard 5 Instructional Delivery because there was a page that gave the exact directions to read to the class and the students had to go step by step without going ahead. This also meets Standard 9 because as a teacher, you could not help the students with anything except device malfunction. It was a very long day for the students because they took the math test in the morning, which is an hour and then in the afternoon they took the ELA test, which is 75 minutes. The PARCC test meets Standard 7 Assessment. The students were able to bring a snack after the math test and were given extra recess/free time to unwind. The students for the most part did well. Some students you can tell rushed through the test and were done in 12 minutes. Week 12 Anne Harris

This week was the first week back from spring break. We decided that we needed to review a lot of math before moving forward with fractions.  I had the students do multiplication review first and then we went into the fraction game they have previously played before break. The students have been struggling with fractions so the game was a good way to review it in a fun environment. We have also practiced the math PARCC test because next week they are taking it. (So next blog I will not have much to write about) They struggled on that practice test when I looked at their results. We had a meeting going over the district math assessment and that was a good experience to have. It was nice to see the math coach and the third grade teachers collaborate together to improve moving forward. This relates to Standard 3 because they were talking about ways to form small groups for reteach lessons and new ways to teach what they struggled with on the test. Anne Harris Week 11

This week we had to begin reviewing with fractions again. Throughout this whole week we have had to re teach and do numerous worksheets to further teach fractions. I had a small group at the back table for the ones really struggling and had the rest of the class moving on. This worked by having those students then continue to play the fraction games and further their practice with each other. The ones at the back table benefited from the small group and hands on approach. This relates to task 3 Planning for Differentiation. Reading for non fiction cause and effect has been going very well so far. They had to work on their own this whole week and were very successful. Some students would ask to see the book immediately without thinking about the main idea, and I made them think for a while before I gave them text support. Anne Harris Week 10

This week started out with going over fractions again. This was very challenging for most of the students the prior week and having a weekend break from it did not help that. I understand how important it is to reinforce that they should always be practicing math facts, even when at home. I had to do a reteach lesson and give many worksheets for practice before moving forward with making equivalent fractions. This made me think and realize that not everything always goes to plan and to not get upset about that. A lesson may take extra days of practice and reteach before the students all understand it. There is no sense in moving on to the next lesson if they aren't understanding the basics. Once we were ready to move on, my lesson on making those fractions went well for the most part. Anne Harris Week 9

This week in math we started fractions. The students were very confused on this lesson. Me and my cooperating teacher decided a reteach lesson was needed. We had a lot of worksheets for practice and made them raise their hand to check it before they we ready to move on to the next one. On Friday we continued with more worksheets for practice and had the students who finished and understood well to help the struggling students. This relates to Standard 3 Planning for Differentiated Instruction because some students needed extra attention and we knew that from the previous days and notes we took. This helped us target those students to have another students helping 1 on 1 as well as the teacher checking for accuracy. Fractions is on the Paarc Test so we are trying to get these in as much as we can before spring break begins. Reading has gone very well for cause and effect.
